‘Uittocht naar Gaza’ – gesprek met Fatena al Ghorra

(NL) Fatena Al Ghorra is te gast bij Rokko om te praten over haar boek ‘Uittocht naar Gaza’. Een boek over de gezichten en stemmen van Gaza, over het gevoel van een glas drinkwater, over zingen als vorm van verzet en woorden als enige pijnstiller. Samen met Fatena Al Ghorra maken we ruimte voor rouw en verzet. De avond wordt geleid door Amani El Haddad. (Gesprek gaat door in het Engels)

Oktober 2023. Voor het eerst in vijftien jaar bezoekt de Belgisch-Palestijnse schrijfster Fatena al Ghorra haar familie in Gaza. Wanneer op 7 oktober de hel losbarst, weigert ze haar bejaarde ouders achter te laten. Onder een spervuur van Israëlische bommen vluchten ze halsoverkop – haar moeder op blote voeten – naar het al-Quds-ziekenhuis. Dat wordt hun toevluchtsoord. Ze blijven daar bijna een maand met twaalfduizend anderen. Terwijl Gaza tot ruïnes wordt gereduceerd, zit Fatena in haar kleine vierkante meter ruimte in een gang op de vierde verdieping van het ziekenhuis: zonder privacy of licht. Ze schrijft. Het zijn brieven aan haar nichtje Lamar. Er is ellende en dood in haar woorden, maar ze bruisen ook van leven. Ze schrijft en doet wat gevangenen en werklozen doen: ze koestert hoop, net zoals Mahmoud Darwish en Rifaat Alareer schreven.

October 2023. For the first time in fifteen years, the Belgian-Palestinian writer Fatena al Ghorra visits her family in gaza. When all hell breaks loose on 7 october, she refuses to leave her elderly parents behind. Under a barrage of Israeli bombs, they flee headlong – her mother barefoot – to al-Quds hospital. That becomes their refuge. They remain there with twelve thousand others for almost a month. Whilst Gaza is being reduced to ruins, Fatena sits in her tiny square metre of space in a corridor on the fourth floor of the hospital: without privacy or light. she writes. they are letters to her niece lamar. There is misery and death in her words, but they also pulsate with life. she writes and does what prisoners and the unemployed do: she cherishes hope, just as mahmoud darwish and rifaat alareer wrote.
