Arts Canteen, London and Trefpunt, Ghent bring together a unique collection of art from Gaza. The exhibition is centered around Mohammed Joha, who will be present at the opening on the and 22nd participate in the panel on the 23rd of November at 2PM. IN x OUT furthermore features work of artists Majed Shala, Rehaf Al Batniji and Nidal Abu Oun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exhibition will be opened by curator Aser El Saqqa from Arts Canteen and central artist Mohammed Joha, and brings a visual and auditive performance by Bint Mbareh. She is a sound artist, researcher and musician whose performance work relies on the voice and buzuq and research into Palestinian history. Her interest lies in the physical parallel between water waves and sound waves, which leads her to question borders between bodies, states, tenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is primarily a creative journey through the work of Mohammed Joha. However, it is also a journey of human experience in which determination, resilience and joy are affirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mohammed Joha<\/strong> offers some insight into his personal tale and creative intellect as well as hinting towards his ultimate desire and mission – to be an effective artistic ambassador for his people, the Gazans and the Palestinians. Joha\u2019s goal is for the art to evoke strong enough feelings to encourage discussion on the international level and help translate into positive action by exploring the themes of loss of identity, home, diaspora and overcoming the physical and psychological boundaries created by conflict, specifically in his own personal story of growing up in Shejayia area in Gaza City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rehaf Al Batniji<\/strong>’s Photos project “Fables Of The Sea” is situated on the Mediterranean coast of Gaza. Palestinian access to the sea has been restricted since 2000 by Israeli military activity. In order to sustain their livelihoods, Gazan fishermen continued to risk death by sailing up to six nautical miles in order to be able to keep fishing the dwindling stocks in their portion of the Mediterranean Sea. Gaza’s fishermen currently have no access to the sea. The distance for fishing is ZERO nautical miles. Rehaf Al Batniji believes in the power of art as a source of healing and justice. She spent much of her time teaching photography to youth and adults in Gaza, helping them simultaneously capture and process their extraordinary way of life. The visuals captures the artist’s vivid personal record of the lives of Gazan fishermen before the latest Israeli invasion and her displacement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Majed Shala<\/strong>, born in Gaza and still living there, is a member of the Fine Artists Association in Palestine and founding member of the Shababeek Group of contemporary arts. Shala has received several awards, and his work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions and biennales in Palestine, England, Lebanon, Jordan, Qatar, Hungary, Brazil, the United States, South Africa and other countries. This work contains a set of interlocking letters in the form of two persons standing close to each other, in a way as to suggest to the viewer the complicity of things. Such is the case here in Gaza, where things are understood only with great difficulty, where we realize that our present reality, meaning the ongoing siege and conflict, is intended to subdue the people who are fighting for their freedom and stability, seeking to assert their rights and to establish statehood like other nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nidal Abu Oun<\/strong> was born in Jabaliya refugee camp, Gaza, in 1971. He trained at the YMCA in Gaza and is a member of the Union of Palestinian Artists. He has exhibited both across Palestine and the Middle East. The distinctive themes of his work are women, the olive tree and striking colour work. The symbols come together to convey strength, hope and faith in positive change. During the most recent war in Gaza, all of Abu Oun\u2019s work was destroyed and he began his most recent series once he had recovered from this trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u062a\u062c\u0645\u0639 Arts
